Pills, or small capsules with a measured amount of drugs inside, have become one of the most recognizable and common forms of medication. Advances in medicine have allowed patients to live longer with a better quality of health, yet when people don’t take their medicine regularly nor at the proper times, these benefits can be limited.
Only 50% of patients who need to take medicine regularly for chronic health concerns actually take their medicine on time. This is especially important when diseases like cancer, HIV, diabetes, and depression require patients to take medication regularly, up to several times in a day, in order to be effective. Because of this, researchers have been searching for ways to create a form of medicine that slowly releases drugs in the body over a longer period of time, so that people don’t have to take them as often to get the same effect.

While injections have been improved upon so that patients don’t have to go to get a shot as frequently, they typically release a large amount of drugs at the beginning, and tend to slow down over time. This makes injections very effective at the beginning, but less potent as time goes on. As a result, patients have to get another injection. Although increasing the amount of drugs in an injection makes the effects last longer, it also tends to be more toxic as well. This means that patients would still have to make a trip to a doctor in order to get another injection, which requires more time commitment than taking pills would. Additionally, implants also require trips to the doctor in order to get them implanted and removed, although they are effective at slowly releasing drugs over time.
To reduce the number of times that a patient has to go to the doctor, a type of drug called PULSED (Particles Uniformly Liquified and Sealed to Encapsulate Drug) was created. PULSED is a new type of injection that both reduces the amount of times a patient needs to take a drug while maintaining a steady level of that drug in the patient's body. Researchers were even able to simplify the process of making these kinds of injections so that they are very cheap to make and easy to mass produce. This means that patients do not have to receive an injection as often when compared to before, and they’re still just as effective as if a patient took a pill regularly.
This new research is still waiting to get a patent, but if it comes into use, it would be very useful in the medical field. Because the PULSED injection controls the rate at which drugs are released, it makes it much more efficient than regular injections and allows for patients to take it less frequently than pills.
